Program details

Overview

The PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics is a research doctorate requiring a minimum of 26 units, including at least eight units of mathematics coursework chosen with the supervisory committee, an oral candidacy examination normally passed before the sixth term, and an 18-unit thesis embodying a significant contribution to mathematical knowledge. Students are expected to complete the program requirements in four years, and Operations Research faculty supervise students working in that area.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.50 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: This program page states no field-specific admission requirements of its own: applicants must instead satisfy Simon Fraser University's Graduate General Regulations 1.3, the university's general standard for doctoral entry, published in the SFU Calendar. Under those regulations, doctoral applicants normally hold a relevant master's degree in good academic standing, or, exceptionally, a bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5/4.33 (or 3.67/4.33 on the last 60 units), from SFU or an equivalent recognized institution, plus evidence of the ability to undertake original research. Non-native English speakers must meet the university's English-language minimum: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with at least 20 per section (PTE Academic 65/60, CAEL 70/60, and Duolingo 125/105 are also accepted). Applicants with a bachelor's background outside mathematics — for example statistics, engineering, or physics — may still be considered suitably prepared. Prospective students should confirm specific expectations with the Graduate Program Assistant ([email protected]).
