Program details

Overview

The PhD in Statistics requires coursework in the first two semesters, a comprehensive examination covering senior undergraduate statistics, and original research culminating in a defended thesis that constitutes a significant contribution to statistical methodology. Students generally complete the program requirements in four years.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.50 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: The department's own admission page states this PhD's academic bar directly: a completed master's degree and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, with letters from referees attesting to the applicant's ability to undertake substantial original research. The page does not quote its own IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/Duolingo figures, stating instead that the department adheres to SFU's English-language requirements and that applicants who do not meet them will not be considered; SFU's general standard therefore applies: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20, Duolingo English Test 125 overall with no section below 105, PTE Academic 65 overall with no section below 60, or CAEL 70 overall with no section below 60. Students already pursuing the department's MSc may transfer into the PhD before completing the master's degree, and applicants interested in actuarial-science thesis topics are directed to contact the relevant faculty member.
