Program details

Overview

The Ethics Certificate combines a core set of philosophy courses with a focus in one of five other areas. You'll complete three courses in ethical theory and three elective courses from concentrations in ethics, justice, and law; ethics, business, and economics; and ethics and global justice.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Ethics certificate page does not set a separate admission test or minimum entering average; it is a declared certificate open to students already admitted to Simon Fraser University, including students outside philosophy. Entry to the required philosophy coursework is via completion of one of PHIL 120W (or equivalent), PHIL 121 or PHIL 221, and every course counted toward the certificate must be passed with a minimum grade of C-. Students must maintain an overall SFU cumulative grade point average of 2.25 to remain eligible. Because the certificate carries no separate admission gate, English-language proficiency and secondary-school prerequisites follow SFU's general undergraduate admission requirements: Canadian applicants need five approved Grade 12 courses including English Studies 12 with 70%+ in Language Arts 11/English 12, and English-language tests follow SFU's general scale (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0).

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
