Overview
SFU's MA in Arts Education invites artists, creatives and arts educators to investigate creativity and meaning-making through the arts in educational settings. Students take five core courses spanning embodiment and curriculum inquiry, aesthetic education, artists and society, drama in education, curriculum theory and art education, and music education as thinking in sound, then move into independent thesis research supervised by faculty. Classes meet in person at the Burnaby and Surrey campuses in late afternoon and early evening, and the cohort progresses through the courses together. The MA stream is aimed at those preparing for varied roles in arts education or building a foundation for doctoral study.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent from a recognized institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (or 3.33/4.33 on the last 60 units). Applicants submit three reference letters, at least two from referees able to comment on their academic ability and judge their likelihood of success in graduate study; a recent, sole-authored academic writing sample of at least 5 pages plus references, written within the last 5 years; a current CV or resume (maximum 3 pages); and a typed letter of intent (maximum 1,000 words) covering their reasons for graduate study, professional accomplishments, and research interests. Non-native English speakers must submit a valid, current (within 2 years) score from a single sitting of an accepted test — SFU's institution-wide minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with at least 20 per section, with Cambridge English, CAEL, PTE, and Duolingo also accepted. Applicants with lower formal qualifications may still be admitted where they show significant relevant experience. The program's next intake commences September 2027, with applications open October 1, 2026 to February 26, 2027.

Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
