The MA/MEd in Counselling Psychology at SFU's Faculty of Education prepares graduates for professional counselling roles in schools, university counselling centres, and community organisations. Students may complete either a Master of Arts, which includes a thesis, or a Master of Education, which requires a comprehensive examination in place of a thesis. The programme normally takes two calendar years plus two additional terms, a minimum of eight terms in total, to complete. Course delivery is in person at the SFU Burnaby and Surrey campuses, with clinic-based coursework held at the SFU Surrey Community Counselling Clinic; classes are scheduled in the late afternoon and early evening to accommodate working professionals. Because the programme includes supervised clinical practice, admitted students must complete a Criminal Record Check before undertaking clinic-based courses. The programme runs on an annual intake cycle with a September start. Graduates are prepared to pursue registration and practice as professional counsellors.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires acceptance into the programme by the Faculty of Education and completion of a Criminal Record Check prior to clinic-based coursework; applicants already working as teachers are directed to SFU's general graduate admission requirements page. International applicants must meet SFU's standard graduate English language proficiency requirement (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0).
