Overview
The History Graduate Certificate is a course-based graduate credential requiring 20 units, comprising HIST 814 (Historical Methods) and three further graduate history courses, typically completed over four terms. It offers training in historiography, historical methods and critical analysis of primary sources, serving secondary teachers, applicants building toward MA admission, and MA students who complete coursework without finishing a thesis.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:2.50 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: This graduate certificate has no field-specific prerequisite of its own: the program's page states that applicants must satisfy the University's general admission requirements for a graduate certificate under Graduate General Regulation 1.3.4. That regulation requires a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent from a recognized institution, together with either a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.33 or a GPA of at least 2.67/4.33 (B-) on the last 60 undergraduate units, plus references from qualified referees supporting the applicant's ability to undertake advanced study. Applicants who fall short of these formal qualifications may still be admitted, conditionally, where they show significant experience relevant to the proposed area of study. Applicants must also satisfy any further requirements the History graduate program itself sets.
