HD in Dental Hygiene is a higher diploma in Dentistry programme taught at St. Clair College in Windsor, Canada. The programme runs for 3 years, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 16,621 per year for local students.
This three-year program trains students in the assessment of teeth and surrounding tissue, preventive and therapeutic treatment, and restorative and orthodontic procedures, preparing graduates to practise within the boundaries the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario sets for dental hygiene. Training combines an on-campus dental clinic with off-site placements at community sites and oral health promotion activities, and develops the dental hygiene process of care alongside inter-professional, client-centred and interpersonal communication skills. Graduates are eligible to sit the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination, required for provincial registration, and typically work as self-regulated professionals in health promotion, education, clinical therapy, advocacy, research or administration, most often employed by a dentist in private practice, though a growing number are self-employed or work in public health education, hospitals or research.
