Overview
This four-year general undergraduate program at St. Jerome's University, federated with the University of Waterloo, offers an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study of law and how it operates in relation to political, social, economic, philosophical, and cultural structures. Coursework examines how law and legal institutions intersect with systems of inequality, including critical perspectives on colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy, alongside subjects such as criminal law, psychology and law, animal law, philosophy of law, and the history of ancient law. The curriculum also builds research methods and legal writing skills. Courses are available both on campus and online. Alongside this general degree, the department offers an Honours Legal Studies degree and a Legal Studies minor. The program suits students drawn to critical thinking, research and inquiry, and civic engagement, who want to examine law through the lens of social justice and critical theory rather than through a pre-professional or practice-oriented approach to legal training.
Application Deadline:St. Jerome's University is federated with the University of Waterloo, so its undergraduate programs are admitted through Waterloo's own process rather than a separate SJU deadline. For programs other than Engineering, which cover all six SJU majors, the application deadline for September 2027 entry is February 1, 2027, with supporting documents such as transcripts due by February 15, 2027; Waterloo's deadlines page states plainly that 'international students have the same deadlines as those listed above.' Waterloo does not publish a fixed opening date on this page, and admission is not described as rolling: applications and documents received after the published dates are considered only as space allows. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
