St. Thomas University's Bachelor of Arts with a major or honours in Human Rights covers the field of human rights in New Brunswick, Canada and internationally, through the only stand-alone Department of Human Rights in Atlantic Canada. It is the only Canadian program where students can complete a human rights honours thesis, and it includes the country's only for-credit undergraduate Moot Court Program, in which students act as legal counsel in fictitious cases and compete in national and international tournaments. Faculty expertise spans Canadian and international human rights, child rights, international criminal law, 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, environmental rights and disability rights. The department runs its own for-credit internship program, placing students with organizations such as the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission, the Child and Youth Advocate Office of New Brunswick and local homeless shelters, several of which have hired past interns. Graduates pursue careers in law, social work, non-governmental organizations, public policy and government, policing, and journalism and communications.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: No admission requirements specific to the Human Rights major are published; the programme page covers the department's faculty, courses and career outcomes rather than entry criteria, so applicants enter through St. Thomas's general Bachelor of Arts requirements. Canadian high school applicants need graduation with a minimum 70% average on five Grade 12 academic courses, including academic English (or French for Francophone-school applicants) and four Grade 12 academic electives from STU's approved list; meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission. International applicants must show academic strength comparable to Canadian applicants and are encouraged to apply by June 1 for September entry or October 1 for January entry. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL, Cambridge English, Duolingo or PTE Academic scores: a full course load requires TOEFL 89 (writing 4.5), IELTS 6.5, MELAB 80, CAEL 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency, Duolingo 115 or PTE 62+; applicants scoring below this but meeting the academic requirements are eligible for STU's ESL programme.
