Overview
St. Thomas University's Bachelor of Arts (Major in Communications and Public Policy) is a declared major within the university's four-year liberal arts degree, following a common first two years before specialization. Described by the university as the only undergraduate major of its kind in Canada, the programme combines a comprehensive communications education with the study of how public policy is created, implemented and evaluated, maintaining a policy component across all four years. Courses are taught by professors and are supported by the Frank McKenna Centre for Communications and Public Policy, which hosts symposiums, forums and guest speakers, and by upper-year special-topics courses addressing current communications issues. The major includes two mandatory for-credit professional internships in a communications agency, non-profit organization or government office, arranged through the STU Internship Program with partners such as 3+ Corporation, Ignite Fredericton, Immigration Fredericton, Naveco Power and Planet Hatch. Students develop skills in writing, multimedia and social media communication, critical thinking and public speaking. Admission Requirements: Admission to this Bachelor of Arts major follows St. Thomas University's general Bachelor of Arts requirements, since the university publishes no major-specific entry criteria and students declare their major only after a common first two years. Canadian high school applicants need high school graduation with a minimum 70% average on five successfully completed Grade 12 academic courses, including Grade 12 academic English (or French for Francophone-school applicants) and four Grade 12 academic electives from STU's approved list; meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission. International applicants must show academic strength comparable to Canadian applicants and are encouraged to apply by June 1 for September entry or October 1 for January entry. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL, Duolingo or PTE Academic scores: a full course load requires TOEFL 89 (writing 4.5), IELTS 6.5, MELAB 80, CAEL 60, Duolingo 115 or PTE 62+; applicants scoring below this but meeting the academic requirements are eligible for STU's ESL programme.
