St. Thomas University's Bachelor of Arts (Major in Catholic Studies) is a declared major within the university's four-year liberal arts degree, offering an interdisciplinary and academically critical study of Catholicism and the Catholic intellectual tradition. The major is open to students of any faith or no faith tradition and is described by the university as nondogmatic, examining how the Catholic tradition addresses questions of social and economic justice and peace, as well as studying the Catholic Church as a cultural, political and religious institution. Courses are complemented by cross-listed offerings in English Language and Literature, Religious Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Fine Arts, and students benefit from co-curricular events, service opportunities and scholarly activities sponsored by the St. John XXIII Centre for Catholic Studies. The major develops skills in thoughtful reading, clear writing and verbal argument. Delivered on STU's Fredericton campus, it prepares graduates for work in non-profit and government organizations, international development, education and business, and provides a foundation for graduate study or religious ministry.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission to this Bachelor of Arts major follows St. Thomas University's general Bachelor of Arts requirements, since the university publishes no major-specific entry criteria and students declare their major only after a common first two years. Canadian high school applicants need high school graduation with a minimum 70% average on five successfully completed Grade 12 academic courses, including Grade 12 academic English (or French for Francophone-school applicants) and four Grade 12 academic electives from STU's approved list; meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission. International applicants must show academic strength comparable to Canadian applicants and are encouraged to apply by June 1 for September entry or October 1 for January entry. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL, Duolingo or PTE Academic scores: a full course load requires TOEFL 89 (writing 4.5), IELTS 6.5, MELAB 80, CAEL 60, Duolingo 115 or PTE 62+; applicants scoring below this but meeting the academic requirements are eligible for STU's ESL programme.
