Program details

Overview

The fifteen-credit certificate engages educators with ideas, issues, and practices around visual and material culture. Although the emphasis is on K-12 teaching, it is open to educators at any level who want to learn outside a traditional classroom setting, with both credit and non-credit options available.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UBC's Academic Calendar entry for the Certificate in Teaching About Visual and Material Culture states that applicants must hold a B.A., B.F.A., or B.Ed. degree. No separate English-language test score, minimum GPA, portfolio, or interview is published for this certificate on the calendar page; as a post-degree certificate built on a completed undergraduate degree, applicants would in practice already meet UBC's general English-language admission standard through that prior credential. The certificate requires 15 credits: EDCP_V 303 (6 credits), EDCP_V 304 (6 credits), and either EDCP_V 408 or EDCP_V 409 (3 credits). Graduates apply to receive the certificate through Workday and are not part of UBC's graduation ceremonies.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
