Overview
UBC's MSc in Forestry is a research degree in which students learn research technique by carrying out a focused study of a specific forestry problem and writing it up as a thesis. The 30-credit programme lets the thesis count for 6, 12 or 18 credits, with the remaining credits filled by approved courses; the split is agreed with the supervisor at the outset. Every student takes a forestry oral communications course (FRST 544 or an approved alternate), international students are advised to add Scientific Writing (FRST 545), and Forestry in BC (FRST 547) is strongly recommended for anyone arriving from outside the province or from a non-forestry discipline. The degree concludes with a master's defence. Applicants may come from science, applied science, agricultural sciences, social science or forestry backgrounds. Students are attached to one of the Faculty's three departments through their supervisor, use the Forest Sciences Centre and two research forests, and most finish in two to three years, with an average timeline of about three years. Delivery is in person at UBC Vancouver.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires an academic background in science, applied science, agricultural sciences, social science, or forestry. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general minimum overall average of B+ (76% at UBC) applies, and individual programs may set a higher bar in practice. Applicants from a university outside Canada where English is not the language of instruction must submit, within 24 months of applying, IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 5.0 overall on the post-2026 six-point scale, or Duolingo English Test 130 overall. The GRE is not required. This is a thesis-supervised program, and all applicants need a firm commitment from a supervisor before applying; the supervisor must have access to a minimum two-year funding package of $18,200 per year. The application also requires three letters of reference, a statement of interest, and, for Canadian Permanent Residents, a photocopy of both sides of their PR card.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
