Overview

Genome Science and Technology (GSAT) is a trans-disciplinary MSc at UBC Vancouver that pairs genomic research with the development of the high-throughput technologies that drive it, spanning human, animal, plant, microbial and viral genomes. The programme is a thesis degree with coursework, and it is distinctive for its laboratory rotation scheme, which lets students spend time in several research groups during the degree and builds relationships for later collaboration. Training runs through joint seminars, cross-disciplinary rotations and hands-on work with new methods, drawing on faculty whose expertise spans genomics and proteomics, bioengineering, systems and chemical biology, and instrument and device development, with links to the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Centre for High-Throughput Technology. Entry is designed for two kinds of applicant: life-science graduates with substantial quantitative experience, or graduates in computer science, mathematics, engineering or physics with substantial life-science exposure. Students awarded the GSAT rotation scholarship enter without a pre-arranged supervisor; all other applicants must secure one before admission. Intakes run in May and September.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 76.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a life-sciences degree with substantial quantitative-science experience, or a computer science, mathematics, engineering, or physics degree with a meaningful life-sciences background; relevant work experience may be considered for applicants outside these areas. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general minimum overall average of B+ (76% at UBC) applies, and the program may set a higher bar in practice. Applicants from a university outside Canada where English is not the language of instruction must submit, within 24 months of applying, IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 5.0 overall on the post-2026 six-point scale, or Duolingo English Test 125 overall. The GRE is not required. All applicants need a firm commitment from a supervisor before applying, except students selected for the program's GSAT rotation scholarship, who do not need a pre-arranged supervisor. The application also requires a CV, official transcripts, and three letters of reference.

Application Details

Start Date: September and May
Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
