Program details

Overview

The Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering is a professional, course-based degree designed for engineers upgrading their technical training. It normally takes twelve months and combines a prescribed set of graduate courses with a capstone design project. The stream is intended for students who want an accelerated technical degree in a mechanical engineering topic not covered by the department's other MEng options, so projects tend to be translational in character and are often run with a partnering company or startup. Applicants are expected to be academically strong with clearly articulated educational objectives. Students may also choose to add a four-month co-op work term, applying in the August or September of their start year and returning afterwards to finish the program. Delivered in person at UBC Vancouver.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 76.00 / %
Admission Requirements: This MEng is administered by UBC Engineering's professional-programs office rather than the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies; the grad-school program page defers to the Department of Mechanical Engineering's own application instructions for admission criteria. Those departmental pages state a minimum overall average equivalent to B+, with the MEng Program Office setting country-specific equivalency standards, plus completion of a four-year Bachelor of Applied Science or comparable credential. English proficiency for applicants whose prior instruction was not in English requires IELTS overall 6.5 or TOEFL iBT overall 93, tests taken within the last 24 months.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
