Overview
The Master of Music in Opera at UBC's School of Music (Faculty of Arts) is a performance degree for singers who have reached a strong level of achievement in their undergraduate studies and show clear promise of further growth on stage. Rather than writing a thesis, candidates stage an opera performance as the culminating requirement, alongside their coursework. A two-year residency on the Vancouver campus is the usual pattern, with all study delivered in person. Entry is by audition, which can be done in person or by video, and the division strongly encourages applicants to audition in person.

Admission Requirements: UBC's admission page for this Master of Music sets the Faculty's minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC), and requires a BMus degree or its equivalent, together with a strong background in opera repertoire and 100-level proficiency in French, German and Italian; acting training, dance or movement training, and facility in the operatic languages, including Russian and Czech, are recommended though not mandatory. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not instruct in English, tested within 24 months, must submit IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no section below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 90 with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21 and Speaking 21, or a Duolingo score of 125 with no section below 115. An audition, in person or by video, is required, with in-person auditions strongly encouraged, and applicants also submit a statement of intent, a repertoire list and prior recital programs.

Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
