Overview
This is a Master of Music (MMus) with a specialization in Performance, offered by the Department of Music at the University of Alberta, covering piano, voice, strings and selected other instruments, with routes in piano pedagogy and wind band conducting. The program requires a minimum of 24 credits (four full-course equivalents), including three required courses in research bibliography and methods, applied music or wind band conducting, and chamber music, plus four graduate-level option courses, one of which must involve a major research paper. Students in band or orchestral instruments must participate for one year in a large ensemble. In place of a thesis, students perform a juried recital, evaluated as the equivalent of the final oral examination. Applicants should hold an Honours BA or BMus, or a recognized equivalent, and normally audition in person, though a recorded audition is accepted for applicants who are not Alberta residents. Delivery is on campus.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MMus program must hold a BMus degree (an Honours B.A. or B.Mus. for Performance) with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study. Where applicable, proof of English Language Proficiency is required: a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 with at least 21 on each skill area for tests before January 21, 2026 (or 5, with at least 4.5 on each area, for tests from that date), or a minimum IELTS Academic overall band of 7.0 with at least 6.5 on each band. Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae, a one- to two-page Statement of Interest, a summary of achievements outside music, and three letters of reference.
