Overview
This is a Master of Music (MMus) with a specialization in Choral Conducting, offered by the Department of Music at the University of Alberta, one of the few active graduate choral-conducting programs in Canada. The program requires a minimum of 24 credits (four full-course equivalents), including six required courses covering research bibliography and methods, choral conducting, two seminars in choral literature, and choral ensemble work, plus one graduate-level option course. Students gain practical experience conducting and rehearsing the Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers, ensembles with active concert and touring schedules that have performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and been featured on CBC broadcasts. In place of a thesis, students complete a juried recital together with an essay on an aspect of choral literature, conducting, or pedagogy, evaluated as the equivalent of the final oral examination. Applicants are welcome from any musical specialization, though a concentration in choral music or voice performance is not required. Delivery is on campus.

Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MMus program must hold a BMus degree (an Honours B.A. or B.Mus. for Performance) with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study. Where applicable, proof of English Language Proficiency is required: a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 with at least 21 on each skill area for tests before January 21, 2026 (or 5, with at least 4.5 on each area, for tests from that date), or a minimum IELTS Academic overall band of 7.0 with at least 6.5 on each band. Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae, a one- to two-page Statement of Interest, a summary of achievements outside music, and three letters of reference.
