Overview
This is a Master of Music (MMus) with a specialization in Composition, offered by the Department of Music at the University of Alberta. The program requires a minimum of 24 credits (four full-course equivalents), including five required courses in computer applications to music, avant-garde studies, music analysis, and two composition seminars, plus two graduate-level option courses. Students work closely with faculty specializing in acoustic and electroacoustic composition, computer music programming, and improvisation, with access to resources for live-electronics performance, field recording, multichannel diffusion, and hardware prototyping, and opportunities to perform with ensembles such as the University Symphony Orchestra and the Contempo New Music Ensemble. In place of a thesis, students present a portfolio of three or four composed and performed works, in acoustic or electronic media or both, with a combined duration of about 60 minutes, evaluated by a jury. Applicants should hold a BMus in Composition or a recognized equivalent. Delivery is on campus.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MMus program must hold a BMus degree (an Honours B.A. or B.Mus. for Performance) with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study. Where applicable, proof of English Language Proficiency is required: a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 with at least 21 on each skill area for tests before January 21, 2026 (or 5, with at least 4.5 on each area, for tests from that date), or a minimum IELTS Academic overall band of 7.0 with at least 6.5 on each band. Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae, a one- to two-page Statement of Interest, a summary of achievements outside music, and three letters of reference.
