Overview

Biochemistry at the University of Winnipeg leads to a Bachelor of Science, available in three-year, four-year, and Honours options. The program is interdisciplinary, drawing courses jointly from the Chemistry and Biology departments and supplementing them with material from Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics. Instruction includes laboratory-based coursework using current biochemical techniques, delivered on the Winnipeg campus. Admission expects standing in Chemistry 40S along with Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S. The program suits students oriented toward the life sciences, whether heading directly into laboratory or industry work or continuing to further study. Career paths named on the program page include roles in food technology and pest control, pharmaceutical and diagnostic design and manufacturing, and positions in government or private laboratories. It is also presented as a foundation for professional programs in medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy, and for graduate-level research in areas such as disease research, drug discovery, forensics, immunology, environmental remediation, and physiology. Students considering health-related or research-intensive careers, and those wanting a strong grounding in laboratory science before pursuing further professional or graduate training, are the program's stated audience.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: In addition to The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements, applicants must have standing in Chemistry 40S and either Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S; Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S is required for the 4-year or Honours B.Sc. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not from an English-exempt country, must meet the university's English proficiency requirement, set out on The University of Winnipeg's own admission requirements page: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall; TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 (86 overall with no component below 20 for tests taken before that date); Duolingo English Test 120; Pearson PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60 (CAEL online 70); LanguageCert Academic 67; or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 180, with results no more than two years old. International applicants apply online through the university's application portal and pay a non-refundable CAD $120 application fee, with official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office; recommended international deadlines are June 15 for Fall (September), October 15 for Winter (January), and February 15 for Spring (May), and applying three to four months ahead is encouraged to allow time for study-permit processing.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
