Overview
The Visual Arts Diploma is a two-year, on-campus credential at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, focused on studio practice and art history across two- and three-dimensional media, including drawing, painting, colour theory, printmaking, photography, 3D design, sculpture, and ceramics. Students complete 60 credits, 48 of which are in Visual Art, with at least 21 of those credits at the second-year level, working in studios such as a darkroom, painting studio, printmaking facilities, and a woodworking shop. Coursework builds technical skills alongside participation in group critiques, art history study, and opportunities to exhibit work on campus and locally, with the option to study abroad for a semester. The Diploma builds toward further study in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) or a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in Visual Arts. Entry is through the Visual Arts Studio Certificate.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Open admission to the Visual Arts Studio Certificate, the entry point for the Diploma. High school graduates may apply and be admitted while completing upgrading at TRU; mature students without a high school diploma may work towards a BC High School Graduation Diploma concurrently through TRU courses; students who do not qualify for mature student status may apply to the TRU University Preparation program.
