Program details

Overview

Arts visuels is a two-year pre-university program (510.A0) at Cégep de Saint-Laurent leading to a DEC, with fall admission, no enrollment quota, and no specific prerequisites. Studio courses cover a range of techniques, including drawing, painting, digital photography, sculpture, and printmaking, together with courses on color, visual and spatial language, and the reasoning behind a creative work. Art-history courses trace major movements from before Impressionism through modern and contemporary art in Quebec and internationally. In the final session, students complete a synthesis project that integrates visual language, mixed techniques, and the research methodology developed throughout the program, and take part in organizing a graduating exhibition and producing a year-end catalogue. Most materials needed for coursework are supplied by the college. Students may also take part in a study trip to New York and cultural outings to museums and galleries, and can combine Arts visuels with another pre-university program, such as human sciences or natural sciences, through a double-DEC. The program suits students who want to build technical skills across several visual-art disciplines while developing a broader perspective on art history and culture, typically as a step toward university studies in the visual arts.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire Arts visuels program is non-quota: applications that meet its conditions are generally admitted. It states no course prerequisite of its own beyond Cégep de Saint-Laurent's general conditions applied for through SRAM: a DES; a DEP plus 5th-secondary language of instruction, 5th-secondary second language and 4th-secondary mathematics; or judged-equivalent training. Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
