Offered by University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, Canada, Trades - Apprenticeship in Welder B and Welder A Modular Training is a trades - apprenticeship in Trades programme. The programme runs for 16 weeks, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 138 per credit for local students.
This program covers Welding Level B and Level A, two sequential technical training blocks that follow UFV's Welding Foundation program on the path to Red Seal certification. Level B runs full-time, Monday to Thursday, over 16 weeks at UFV's Chilliwack Trades and Technology Centre, and covers intermediate arc welding processes including Shielded Metal Arc Welding #2 and Gas Metal Arc Welding #2, along with quality control standards; entry requires completion of Welding Foundation plus 1,000 hours of work-based training, with 3,000 or more hours recommended. Level A follows, running over eight weeks at the same location with more frequent intakes, and advances into Shielded Metal Arc Welding #3, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding #2, and metallurgy, building toward eligibility for the Red Seal ticket. Both levels follow an apprenticeship-style training model with small class sizes. The program suits welders who have completed foundational training and accumulated work-based hours and are continuing toward journeyperson certification, rather than complete beginners to the trade.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UFV's Welding Level B and Level A program page sets out trade-progression requirements rather than an academic file, and states no GPA or English/French language test score. Entry to Level B requires successful completion of Welding Foundations and its level exam, plus a minimum 1,000 documented work-based training hours logged in a welding logbook and signed off by the sponsoring employer, though Skilled Trades BC recommends 3,000 or more hours before challenging the Level B exam. Entry to Level A requires completion of Welding Level B and submission of the welding logbook. No portfolio, interview, minimum age, letter of intent, criminal record check, or immunisation requirement is described. Level B runs August and January intakes; Level A runs August, October, January and March intakes.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
