Program details

Overview

This program provides Level 1 technical training for the Steamfitter/Pipefitter apprenticeship at Thompson Rivers University's Kamloops campus, part of the piping trades pathway that also includes plumbing. Steamfitters and pipefitters install, test and maintain systems that carry water, steam, chemicals and fuel, including heating and cooling systems in large industrial plants and various systems in electric power plants, working with materials such as steel, copper, plastic and a range of metal alloys. The page aligns the program with the SkilledTradesBC profile for the trade, situating it within the province's recognized apprenticeship and Red Seal framework, though it does not itemize hours, fees or a fixed weekly duration for this level. As with other TRU apprenticeship programs, candidates must already be indentured with a sponsoring employer to attend the in-school technical-training block, alternating classroom and shop instruction with periods of paid, supervised work in the field. Admission requires Grade 12 or equivalent, including English 12, and either Algebra 11 or Trade Mathematics 11, plus Physics 11 or Science and Technology 11. It suits people already working toward the steamfitter/pipefitter trade under an employer sponsorship who need to complete the Level 1 classroom and shop component of their apprenticeship.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program's own page lists recommended, not mandatory, education for this apprenticeship: Grade 12 or equivalent including English 12, Algebra 11 or Trade Mathematics 11, and Physics 11 or Science and Technology 11. Apprentices must purchase required textbooks and provincial competency manuals and pay tuition fees while attending TRU. International applicants must also meet Thompson Rivers University's own language bar for direct entry into an undergraduate certificate or diploma program: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20, per TRU's English requirements page.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to TRU: for the September (Fall) intake the deadline is 1 May, for January (Winter) it is 1 September, and for the May (Summer) intake it is 1 January; applications for most programs open 1 October, and a deadline falling on a weekend or statutory holiday moves to the next working day. International applicants follow the same intake structure with deadlines of 1 May (September), 1 October (January) and 1 February (May); TRU still reviews later applications where space remains, though high-volume programs can close early, so admission runs on a rolling basis around these published cut-offs for the 2027 entry cycle. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
