The Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Certificate, offered by the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, prepares registered nurses for direct care, health promotion, and the treatment and management of chronic health conditions in advanced nursing practice roles. The certificate consists of seven required courses, including a Major Research Paper, an Integrated Practicum, Pathophysiology for PHCNP, PHCNP Roles and Responsibilities, two Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis courses, and two Primary Health Care Therapeutics courses. Instruction is delivered in person, on a full-time basis, with students permitted up to three years to complete the seven courses. Admission requires a Bachelor's degree in nursing or its equivalent, the equivalent of two years of full-time nursing practice within the past five years, and current registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. On completion, graduates are prepared to write the College of Nurses of Ontario's NP – Primary Health Care (Ontario) certification exam.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 (B) overall and a 3.00 (B) average in the last two years of study (a CGPA of 3.67 or above is preferred). The equivalent of two years of full-time nursing practice (3,640 hours) within the past five years is required at the time of application, with preference given to candidates with continuous RN experience in direct clinical practice. Applicants must hold, or be eligible for, registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Applicants whose undergraduate training was in a language other than English must provide language proficiency scores.
