Overview
The Certificate in Preparatory Music Studies is a compulsory pathway program at Université de Moncton for students who do not yet have the knowledge and skills the Department of Music requires for direct entry into the Bachelor of Music. It builds competency in music reading, fundamental music theory, ear training, basic instrumental technique, and general knowledge of music history. Admission requires candidates to demonstrate natural ability on their principal instrument and genuine aptitude for music through entrance examinations in elementary theory, performance, and keyboard knowledge, details of which are available from the Department of Music. Enrolled students must attend a minimum number of classical concerts presented by the department or elsewhere, and must obtain their principal instrument instructor's permission before performing publicly; folk, popular, and jazz performances are exempt from this rule but still require departmental permission when representing the department. Students must also attend rehearsals and public performances of the ensembles in which they are enrolled. The certificate leads on to eligibility criteria for the Bachelor of Music.
