The Certificate in Jazz is a 15-credit-unit undergraduate certificate for any University of Saskatchewan student, structured as a two-year course of study that can be completed full-time or part-time. The program focuses on jazz music studies, requiring courses such as Jazz Improvisation (MUS 175.3 or MUS 386.3), a jazz history course (MUS 184.3), a jazz arranging course (MUS 283.3), a seminar (MUS 401.1), and two credit units of applied jazz performance study taken twice (MUAP 208.1). Students complete a further 3 credit units chosen from jazz-specific options or cognate disciplines including English, Art and Art History, and Drama. Instruction combines music theory, history, and performance training with attention to the coordinative skills musicians need for practice and performance. At least half of the required coursework must be completed at the University of Saskatchewan, and the certificate can be pursued on its own or alongside another degree program. Applicants may enter directly from high school.
