Overview

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) is a graduate research program at the Moncton campus, completed over one to three years with a minimum residence of one academic year. The 42-credit curriculum comprises 33 mandatory credits — an advanced legal research course and a 30-credit thesis — and 9 elective credits chosen from more than 30 course options spanning areas such as business law, family law, environmental law, and intellectual property. The thesis is developed in collaboration with a faculty supervisor, is expected to meet publication-quality research standards, and is defended publicly. Admission requires a Juris Doctor from a Canadian university or an equivalent credential, functional knowledge of English, and satisfaction of the university's general conditions for master's-level admission; the admissions committee may also weigh professional experience and social commitment. Final acceptance depends on the availability of a faculty supervisor able to guide the applicant's chosen research area. The program suits law graduates seeking to develop original legal research and scholarly writing skills through a supervised thesis, within a flexible one-to-three-year completion window.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires satisfying the general graduate admission conditions (University Regulation 22.1) and holding a Juris Doctor from a Canadian university, or a degree the Faculty's graduate committee judges equivalent. Applicants must demonstrate functional knowledge of English. The Faculty may also weigh experience, community involvement, and answers on the application form, and may require an interview to confirm the candidate's research interests align with faculty availability. The program runs 1 to 3 years, based in Moncton.
