Overview

The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law is a graduate program for established academics and scholars with no prior legal training who want to add a legal dimension to scholarship in their own discipline. It is intended for applicants who already work and write within a field related to law and who wish to bring legal analysis into that existing research program rather than train as practising lawyers. The degree is administered by the Faculty of Law with the School of Graduate Studies, and admission is assessed on the strength of the applicant's existing scholarly record and the fit between their research interests and the law faculty's expertise. Applicants set out their proposed area of study in a personal statement and provide a sample of their scholarly writing as part of the application, and a graduate unit assigns an academic contact once a student is admitted.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must be established academics or scholars already working and writing in a discipline related to law, and should normally hold a graduate degree, ideally a doctorate, with the equivalent of a University of Toronto B+ standing in their final year. Applications require two academic reference letters, a CV of no more than three pages, a 250-word personal statement, and a writing sample. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet one of the following minimums: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component; TOEFL iBT 5 overall on the new 1-6 scale, with at least 5 in Reading, Listening and Writing and 4.5 in Speaking; CAEL 70 overall with at least 70 in each section; or Cambridge English Qualifications 191 overall with at least 185 in each section.
