Program details

Overview

The JD program at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law is a three-year professional law degree delivered in person at the Jackman Law Building in downtown Toronto. The curriculum runs through a structured First-Year Program followed by an Upper Years phase built around elective coursework. Students can take part in clinics, mooting programs, and externships, and can pursue combined or joint degree options as well as international exchange opportunities. Admission review is described as holistic and merit-based, with dedicated application pathways for Indigenous applicants and Black students, and the faculty states that an applicant's ability to pay tuition plays no role in admission decisions; more than five million dollars in financial aid is provided annually to support students once admitted. The program suits students aiming to practise law in Canada or elsewhere, who want a rigorous, in-person legal education combined with practical skills training through clinical and advocacy work, and who may also be interested in combining the JD with study in another discipline through a joint degree.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The JD program requires the LSAT of all first-year and transfer applicants without exception; an English proficiency test (TOEFL/IELTS) is not required of any applicant. An undergraduate degree or equivalent must be completed by matriculation in May of the entry year, though Jackman Law states no minimum GPA threshold and reviews files holistically rather than against a set average. Applicants submit a mandatory personal statement of up to 5,000 characters plus an optional essay of up to 2,500 characters; letters of recommendation are not accepted as part of the file. The Faculty describes admission as based entirely on merit through a holistic review process. First-year intake is once yearly in August; for 2027 entry, LSAT scores from July 2021 through November 2026 are accepted and the application deadline is November 1, 2026, 11:59pm Toronto time.
