This four-year Bachelor of Education program trains specialists to teach French as a second language at the primary and secondary levels, and in adult education settings. The 120-credit curriculum combines coursework in second-language acquisition theory, French-as-a-second-language didactics, and psychopedagogy with four supervised school internships, one per year of study, giving students progressively greater classroom responsibility. Students also study curriculum design, evaluation methods, and classroom management adapted to second-language learners of varying ages and backgrounds. Admission requires demonstrated French-language competency and intermediate-level English proficiency. On successful completion, graduates are awarded the Quebec teaching certificate (brevet d'enseignement), which qualifies them to teach French as a second language in Quebec's public and private school networks, as well as in adult and community education programs. The program is offered full-time on UQAM's Montreal campus, with admission each autumn.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is available through one of four bases: holding a Diplome d'etudes collegiales (DEC) or equivalent, selected using the minimum cote de rendement (cote R) required each year (21 for the most recent cohort); at least 600 hours of relevant experience working with youth or adults aged 21 and over; completion of 15 university credits with a minimum GPA of 2.4 on a 4.3 scale; or an appropriate diploma obtained outside Quebec after at least 13 years of schooling, with a minimum average of 11.5/20. All candidates must demonstrate intermediate-level English competency and pass a French-language written test (the Uniform French Examination for DEC holders, the ministry's test, or UQAM's own test) or hold an applicable exemption.
