Overview

This 30-credit certificate at Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres is delivered entirely online and introduces students to general translation from English into French, either as initial career training or for personal interest, and also suits people who translate occasionally as a complementary part of their regular job. The 30 mandatory credits build competence in French grammar and style, professional translation terminology, source-text analysis, terminology research, and translation-technology tools, strengthening linguistic competence in both working languages and mastery of translation working methods. Depending on the concentration chosen, courses shared with the Bachelor's in Translation (program 7781) can be credited toward that bachelor's degree. The certificate is based at the Trois-Rivieres campus and admits students each fall and winter term.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Quebec applicants may be admitted with a college diploma (DEC) or the equivalent, or on an experience basis by demonstrating relevant knowledge and experience in translation, supported by attestations. Applicants who studied outside Quebec need a pre-university diploma totalling 13 years of schooling, or a 12-year diploma plus one year of university study, or the equivalent. All candidates must pass the institutional French test (TIFEQ) and a three-part admission examination covering French grammar (50%), English comprehension (20%), and English-to-French translation (30%), with minimum scores of 70% in French and 65% in English.
