Overview
This master's program (M.Sc.) in Forest Sciences develops the scientific, technical, and economic expertise needed to address challenges in sustainable forest and environmental management. The 45-credit program is normally completed over two years of full-time study, with courses offered in a combination of daytime and distance formats that allow full-time or part-time study. Students choose between two pathways: a thesis track, which concludes with an essay built on a comprehensive literature review, or an intervention-project track, which emphasizes practical competencies gained through workplace experience and concludes with a project report. Coursework and research span areas such as ecosystem-based forest management, forest economics and policy, forest pathology, ecophysiology, environmental hydrology, landscape modelling, tropical ecosystems, and geomatics and GIS. Before applying, candidates must contact and secure a professor willing to supervise their thesis or project; the application is submitted only once invited by that supervisor, together with a CV, a letter of motivation, the supervisor's acceptance, and two reference reports. Instruction at Université Laval is in French, and while French proficiency is not set here as a separate formal admission test, it is strongly recommended; candidates must also be able to read and understand English, though English proficiency is likewise not a distinct admission requirement.
