Program details

Overview

This Bachelor of Design program lets students focus on Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, or both areas together, building project management, attention to detail, and creative thinking skills. The program is described as specialized and competitive, with full degree requirements set out in the University of Alberta Calendar edition matching each student's year of admission. It is intended to prepare students for design careers, whether starting an independent design practice, working within a larger design firm, continuing into an architecture degree, or pursuing other design-related paths. Career examples include graphic and visual communications designer, UX/UI designer, illustrator, animation modeler, industrial designer, exhibition designer, and arts or cultural manager. It suits students who want a design-focused undergraduate degree with the option to concentrate on product design, visual communication, or a combination of the two.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from high school. Applicants to the Bachelor of Design need at least a 70% average on 5 eligible Grade 12 subjects: English 30-1 plus four other approved 30-level subjects (maximum one Fine Arts course). A portfolio must be submitted alongside the online application (deadline March 1) — BA applicants do not need one, but BDes and BFA applicants do. Some BDes routes carry extra prerequisites: the Engineering route requires Pure Math 30 or Math 30-1. Meeting the 70% minimum does not guarantee admission; the portfolio is assessed alongside academics and may include an interview.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
