Overview
The Social Sciences route of the Bachelor of Design program is offered through the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. Alongside core design coursework in Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design, students combine traditional design principles and techniques with disciplines such as psychology and sociology, focusing on the psychological, social, and cultural considerations of design in addition to materials, processes, and formal design concerns. The Bachelor of Design focuses on socially responsible and sustainable design and is offered with a choice of four routes: Business and Marketing, Engineering, Social Sciences, or General. The Faculty of Arts offers over 900 courses across the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Graduates commonly pursue careers such as advertising, artist, communications, critic, game or app developer, graphic designer, museum or gallery curator, product designer, and UX designer.
