Overview
This undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor's degree in industrial design from Universite de Montreal, offered full-time over four years through day courses on the Montreal campus. The 120-credit curriculum trains students to conceive objects, services, and systems within a sustainable-development approach, combining theoretical study of materials, ergonomics, psychology, and semiotics with practical design projects, many developed in partnership with industry. Students build a culture of design methodology spanning creation, research, and development. Admission is open to Quebec CEGEP graduates, to university students with prior credits in related design fields, and to transfer candidates, who are assessed on prior schooling, portfolio, motivation letter, and curriculum vitae. A background check is mandatory for students undertaking placements in health, social-service, or education settings. The program prepares graduates for professional practice as industrial designers or for further study in design-related fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission routes include Quebec CEGEP (DEC) graduates, university students holding a DEC plus at least 12 completed university credits, and transfer candidates with at least 12 university credits in a related design field; for CEGEP and university applicants, selection rests solely on the strength of the academic record, while transfer candidates are assessed on prior schooling, portfolio (prepared per the program's portfolio guide), motivation letter, and curriculum vitae. Because instruction is in French, applicants must document French proficiency corresponding to the program's requirement, either by passing Quebec's Epreuve uniforme de francais, by completing the requisite French-taught university studies, or by scoring at least C1 in oral and written comprehension on an accepted French test taken within the previous 24 months. A criminal background check is mandatory for any student undertaking a placement in a health facility, social-service establishment, or education setting.
