Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Foundational/Qualifying Year is the common first-year curriculum for students entering the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering directly from high school. Coursework covers calculus, chemistry, physics, linear algebra, mechanics, and computer programming, alongside hands-on labs and two collaborative courses on the engineering profession and professional development. After completing the Qualifying Year, students choose among nine engineering degree programs, including Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Materials, Mechanical, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering, and between traditional and co-operative education streams, with the option to pursue a sub-specialization. Campus Saint-Jean also offers a French-language stream of the Qualifying Year in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering. Graduates of this first year proceed into a wide range of engineering career paths across the disciplines it feeds into.
