Overview

The Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta provides a broad view of the life sciences, covering animal, plant, and human biology. Housed in a Faculty of Science with twelve teaching departments and 29 areas of study, the major is customizable: students can add an optional minor or double major chosen from more than 60 subjects, keep their program broad, or focus more deeply on a particular area of biology, and an Honors version of the BSc is also offered. It suits students with varied interests across the life sciences who want flexibility to shape their own program rather than follow a fixed specialization track. Career paths named on the program page include bacteriologist, biologist, botanist, cancer researcher, conservationist, ecologist, entomologist, environmental education specialist, forensic laboratory analyst, geneticist, marine biologist, microbiologist, research scientist, and zoologist. The program is delivered on the university's Edmonton campus.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from Alberta high school. Required: English Language Arts 30-1 and Mathematics 30-1, plus two of Biology 30, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, or Computing Science ADV (CTS-5Cr), plus one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences. Admission to the Faculty of Science is competitive: the Faculty requires a minimum application average of 70% across the required Grade 12 admission subjects, and its three-year admission-average trend is low 80s to mid 90s — meeting the minimum does not guarantee a seat. Some university courses carry additional Grade 12 prerequisites beyond the admission requirements. English language proficiency is required of all applicants regardless of citizenship.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
