Overview
This Honors program in Cell Biology takes an integrated approach to the study of cells as the basic units of life, drawing on the other life sciences to examine how cells function. Coursework in protein function, gene expression, and developmental biology builds a comprehensive background for entry into the workforce, graduate school, or a professional program such as medicine. It is one of the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Science with Honors degrees, offered by the Faculty of Science, and is also available as a BSc Major. The Honors track embeds a research thesis project and requires a higher academic standard than the Major program; students may add a minor from the Faculty of Arts, Native Studies, Business, or Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, though a double major is not available. Graduates commonly pursue roles such as biotechnologist, cytologist, geneticist, microbiologist, research scientist, and radiation protection technologist.

Admission Requirements: Direct entry from Alberta high school (or equivalent) requires five Grade 12 courses: English Language Arts 30-1; Mathematics 30-1; two of Chemistry 30, Physics 30, Biology 30, Computing Science 30 (Advanced), or Mathematics 31; and one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences. This subject area also requires Biology 30, Chemistry 30, and Physics 20 (Physics 30 recommended) as a prerequisite before registering in program courses. The minimum average to apply to the BSc Honors program is 80%; meeting it does not guarantee admission, since places are allocated by a competitive average that varies by year. Applicants whose primary language is not English must meet the university's English Language Proficiency requirement. Admission is offered for the Fall (September) term only.
