Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Physics at the University of Alberta is offered by the Department of Physics, in some areas jointly with the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Research areas include astrophysical sciences such as astronomy, cosmology and space physics; biophysics, including molecular dynamics and gene networks; condensed matter and atomic, molecular and optical physics, covering quantum technologies and superconductivity; particle physics, with experimental work conducted at CERN, SNOLAB, ICECUBE and TRIUMF; and geophysics, including seismology and rock physics. The program is thesis-based and delivered on campus. Students complete a minimum of six units of coursework, register in a 900-level thesis course, present their research at an annual seminar from the second year onward, and must pass an oral candidacy examination in their field of research. Admission requires an undergraduate degree in physics, engineering physics, geophysics or an equivalent program, with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 on the 4-point scale. Applicants submit a CV, a statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation.
