Overview
The Ad Hoc Biophysics PhD Program is offered through Interfaculty Studies and applies the theories and methods of physics to the study of biological systems, drawing on biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, and biomedicine. It involves around 50 researchers from the Centre de Recherche en Biologie Structurale, based in the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, Engineering, Science, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In the first year, students complete three lab rotations across different research groups and take courses building a foundation in biophysics methodologies, including light and electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, NMR, and cryo-EM. The program trains students to identify and pursue biophysics research projects addressing challenges in biology, with access to research laboratories and shared service platforms. Admission is in the Fall term.

Admission Requirements: Applicants typically hold a master's degree in a biomedical-science-related field (such as anatomy, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and immunology, molecular biology, pharmacology, or physiology), engineering, physics, or chemistry, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 on the McGill scale. Exceptional candidates with an eligible bachelor's degree and a strong research record, including publications or competitive awards, may be considered for direct entry at the same minimum GPA. Applications require a 1000-word personal statement, two letters of reference, and a current CV; supervisor confirmation is not required for admission.
