Overview
The Graduate Embedded Certificate in Data Science (Mathematical and Statistical Sciences) is offered by the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences to students already registered in one of the department's graduate degree programs (MSc or PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Statistical Machine Learning, or Modelling, Data, and Predictions). To complete the certificate, students take the Graduate Teaching and Learning Certificate Level 1 (GTL Level 1) together with two required graduate courses, MATH 572 (Mathematical Modelling in Industry, Government, and Sciences) and STAT 541 (Statistics for Learning), plus one further three-unit course chosen from a list including MATH 508, MATH 509, MATH 524, MATH 535, MATH 570, STAT 513, STAT 537, STAT 553 and STAT 578. Other courses may be approved by the department's Academic Director of Graduate Studies. On completing these designated courses and GTL Level 1 alongside the graduate degree, the student is awarded the certificate in addition to their graduate degree. The program is delivered on campus and is course-based.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.30 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Entry is through admission to a graduate degree program (MSc or PhD) in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences; the department's minimum requirement for the MSc is a four-year undergraduate degree with a strong background in mathematics, physics and/or statistics, and for the PhD an MSc in mathematical, physical or statistical sciences, in both cases with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4.0-point scale (calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework, or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study) from the University of Alberta or an equivalent institution. Applicants to Mathematical Finance should hold a previous credential in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering or finance; applicants to Statistical Machine Learning should hold one in mathematical and statistical sciences or computing science. Meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission. Where applicable, applicants must also meet the university's English Language Proficiency requirement.
