Program details

Overview

This thesis-based Master of Science program at the University of Alberta trains students in pharmaceutical science and pharmacy practice research. Candidates complete a minimum of six units of coursework, including two graduate courses chosen with a supervisor and a required course on advanced oral and written communication, alongside an original 900-level thesis defended in a final oral presentation. The program normally takes at least two years, with a maximum of four, and requires at least two four-month terms of full-time on-campus attendance in Edmonton. Applicants typically hold a pharmacy degree, though candidates from related fields with a strong academic record may also apply, and admission requires a faculty supervisor's agreement to supervise the research before applying. Students take part in departmental research activities such as seminars and an annual research day, and the faculty offers graduate assistantships, scholarships and awards to support study. The program suits graduates and professionals seeking to build applied and theoretical research skills in pharmaceutical science ahead of academic, industry or advanced clinical practice careers.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Applicants need an undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta or an equivalent from a recognized institution, and should normally be graduates in pharmacy, though the Faculty will accept qualified applicants with degrees in related fields; the minimum admission GPA is 3.0 on a 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework or the equivalent two years of full-time study. A qualified faculty member must agree to supervise the applicant before they can apply for admission. English language proficiency follows the University's general standard, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 21, and scores more than two years old are not accepted. Applicants must submit a CV or resume and three letters of reference.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
