Program details
Overview
This program is a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), entry-to-practice, offered through the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and described as the only pharmacy program in Alberta. It prepares students for pharmacy practice across hospitals, primary and family care clinics, community practice, and other specialized settings, covering pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, therapeutics, and practice skills alongside a coordinated experiential program. The degree runs four years and combines coursework with six practical field placement experiences, not counting the pre-professional courses required before entry; admission requires satisfactory completion of 60 units of transferable university coursework. A separate PharmD stream exists for practicing pharmacists who already hold a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, distinct from this entry-to-practice route. The page notes that Alberta pharmacists can provide services such as health advice, disease screening, injections and vaccinations, prescriptions, and referrals, reflecting the scope of practice graduates are trained toward. The program suits students without a prior pharmacy credential who want a professional doctoral degree combining classroom pharmaceutical science with substantial field placement experience, preparing them for front-line patient care roles across a range of health care settings in Alberta and elsewhere in Canada.
