Program details
Overview
This is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) delivered collaboratively at the Medicine Hat College site over four years. Students apply to Medicine Hat College for Year 1, complete the first two years there, and then apply to the University of Calgary to begin Year 3. Learning combines active classroom instruction with small clinical groups placed in a variety of off-campus nursing practice settings, along with simulated clinical laboratories, home visits, faculty-guided seminars, and low- and high-fidelity simulation. Core coursework includes Introduction to Nursing, Indigenous Health Studies, Nursing Amid Complexity, Evidence-Informed Nursing, and Nursing as Ethical Practice. The program admits high school graduates, university transfer students, adult or mature students, and after-degree students. It prepares graduates for registration as nurses, combining clinical skill development with theoretical knowledge across community and hospital practice settings in the Medicine Hat region.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This program begins in year 2 and is only available to transfer and after-degree students; it is not a direct-entry high school pathway. Applicants must have completed 45 units of post-secondary coursework by the end of the fall term in the year of application, and must have successfully completed the first two years of the Medicine Hat College Nursing Program. All applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must separately meet the university's English language proficiency requirement. Applicants who do not hold the Medicine Hat College nursing background should instead apply through the standard Bachelor of Science in Nursing (year 1) admission route.
