Program details
Overview
This is Year 2 of the University of Calgary's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program, a professional degree preparing students for careers that draw on clinical skill and theoretical knowledge. Instruction combines classroom learning with small clinical groups placed in a variety of off-campus nursing practice settings, alongside simulated clinical laboratories. Core coursework includes Introduction to Nursing, Indigenous Health Studies, Nursing Amid Complexity, Evidence-Informed Nursing, and Nursing as Ethical Practice. The program emphasizes collaborative, team-based learning and includes practicum experience that provides hands-on career-related experience in professional nursing settings. Admission is available to high school graduates, university transfer students, adult or mature students, and after-degree students entering directly into the second year of the program. Graduates are prepared to register as nurses, applying clinical and theoretical training across a range of health care settings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This entry point is for transfer and after-degree applicants only, not direct-entry high school students. Applicants need 30 units of post-secondary transferable coursework completed by the end of winter term (maximum 3 units may be a language other than English or a fine-arts course), including: English, Arts, Humanities or Social Science (3 units); Statistics (3 units); Human Anatomy and Physiology approved by the Faculty of Nursing with a grade of C- or better (6 units); Introduction to Nursing (NRSG 201) or equivalent (3 units); a Science or Social Science option (3 units); and Alberta Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2, Biology 30, and Chemistry 30 or Science 30 (or post-secondary equivalents). Admission uses a transfer GPA benchmark of approximately 3.0, with places allocated through the Faculty of Nursing's lottery admission process for on-campus programs. All applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must separately meet the university's English language proficiency requirement.
