Program details

Overview

This is a course-based Master of Nursing (MN) offered by the University of Calgary through online delivery. The program is built around four courses, with a standard completion time of one year and a maximum of two years, and does not require a thesis or a graduate supervisor. It is part of a laddered pathway: applicants must first complete the Advanced Nursing Practice I and II graduate certificates before being admitted to the master's degree itself. Coursework covers quantitative and qualitative research methods together with nursing leadership. The program is aimed at Registered Nurses or Registered Psychiatric Nurses who already hold a baccalaureate degree and an expert knowledge base, and who want to move into advanced practice in areas such as direct clinical care, education, or health policy and leadership. It suits nurses seeking career advancement without committing to a thesis-based research degree. The credential can also serve as a prerequisite for doctoral studies in nursing.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: This program is offered only as a laddered pathway: admission requires prior completion of the Advanced Nursing Practice I and II Graduate Certificates, and applicants must hold active registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (through the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta, the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta, or the equivalent body in their province or territory of employment). Academic requirements are a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale over the last two years of full-time undergraduate study (at least 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units), a baccalaureate degree normally in nursing, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the Advanced Nursing Practice I and II certificates, and one undergraduate statistics course completed with a grade of 'C' or better. Programme page's English language proficiency (ELP) section defers to the Faculty's ELP requirements in the Academic Calendar without publishing programme-specific scores, so the university-wide English Language Proficiency requirement from ucalgary.ca (IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 86 legacy scale, or Duolingo 120) is cited as the general reference per institution excerpt; exemptions apply after prior study in English per that page.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary opens undergraduate applications for domestic applicants on 1 October 2026 and for international applicants on 15 August 2026, both closing on the same firm application deadline of 1 March 2027, with supporting documents due by 15 March 2027 and offers accepted by 1 May 2027. International applicants follow the identical March 1 deadline; the university publishes no separate, later international closing date. Applications are not accepted on a rolling basis after the deadline for most direct-entry programmes, though a small number of programmes (e.g. Nursing) run further selection rounds into the summer while space remains. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
