Program details

Overview

The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is offered through the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and engages with sociocultural and ecological challenges of place-making, climate change and resilience. The program runs a foundation year followed by two years of study at the Master's level, combining lecture and studio-based coursework with opportunities to study in Melbourne and Barcelona. The program is seeking accreditation through the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). Graduates are prepared to practice as landscape architects, working on the design and planning of outdoor spaces, urban landscapes and ecological systems. Detailed admission requirements, including academic prerequisites and grade point average, are maintained by the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a four-year baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a recognized institution, in any discipline; the program includes a Foundation Year for students without a related design background, which is waived for applicants with a previous related design degree, including SAPL's own Bachelor of Design in City Innovation (Landscape Architecture concentration). A minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale is required, calculated over the last 60 units (minimum 20 courses) of university-level coursework at the time of application, using a self-calculated GPA. Applicants whose primary language is not English must meet an English proficiency threshold: TOEFL iBT 105 (5.0 for tests after January 21, 2026), IELTS 7.5, PTE Academic 62, CAEL 70 with no section below 70, or on a temporary basis Duolingo 135 or TOEFL iBT Home Edition 105. Required application materials include unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions, two references (ideally one academic), a resume of up to two pages, a statement of interest (750 words written or a 2:30 video), and a digital portfolio of up to 25 pages demonstrating creative ability, with particular attention to work showing interest in landscape architecture. The application fee is CDN$125 for Canadian citizens/permanent residents and CDN$145 for international applicants.
