The Master of Architecture (MArch) at the University of Toronto is offered through the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, and is a graduate professional degree intended for students who do not already hold a professional degree in architecture. The curriculum builds a base of knowledge in history, theory, technology, ecology, society, and professional practice, developed mainly through an intensive sequence of design studio courses. An advanced-standing option is available as a two-year alternative for applicants who already meet certain qualifications, shortening the path for those students relative to the standard track. Applicants who already hold a professional architecture degree are directed instead toward the faculty's post-professional MArch or its Master of Urban Design program. Minimum admission average is in the mid-B range, and no standardized test is required. The program suits students moving into architecture from an unrelated or pre-professional background who want a studio-centred graduate education covering the full range of design, technical, and professional-practice knowledge needed to enter the field.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Master of Architecture requires a bachelor's degree (BA, BSc, BASc, BES, BFA or BCom) with a final-year grade point average of at least mid-B; secondary-school calculus and physics plus a university-level course in architectural history are recommended, and design/creative-arts preparation (drawing, film, animation, graphic design, sculpture) is encouraged but not required. A two-year advanced-standing option is available to applicants whose academic background and design portfolio, reviewed by the MArch admissions committee, demonstrate the specific prerequisite coursework (four design studios, visual communications, technology, history, structures, building science and environmental systems); the standard three-year option does not require a portfolio. Applicants whose first language is not English and who were not instructed in English must meet the university's School of Graduate Studies proficiency minimums — TOEFL iBT 93 overall with at least 22 in each component, or IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each band — per General Regulations section 4.3, since the Daniels Faculty's own program page does not list separate scores. No standardized test such as the GRE is required.
