The Master of Social Work (MSW) thesis-based program is a nationally accredited degree that prepares graduates for advanced professional social work practice and further doctoral study. Students choose from three specializations: Clinical Social Work Practice, International and Community Development, or Leadership in the Human Services. Applicants who hold a Bachelor of Social Work complete 10 courses (30 units); applicants with an unrelated four-year degree complete foundation coursework followed by the same core program, for 19 courses (57 units) in total. All students undertake original research culminating in a thesis defended before an examination committee. The program is delivered through distance (online) learning combined with in-person residencies held in Calgary or Edmonton, mixing real-time scheduled classes with self-paced coursework. Admission requires a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale over the final two years of undergraduate study, a BSW or four-year bachelor's degree, and the equivalent of two years of full-time paid work or 3,000 hours of paid or volunteer experience in the human services field.
